Over 40 Children Reported Missing at Popular West Sussex Beach in One Day Amid Surge in Coastal Emergencies
Emergency services across West Sussex faced one of their busiest days this summer on Saturday, 21 June, with Littlehampton Coastguard confirming more than seven emergency incidents, including over 40 missing children at West Wittering Beach alone.
The Coastguard worked in coordination with Selsey and Hayling Island Coastguard Rescue Teams, Sussex Police, RNLI lifeboat crews, and lifeguards to respond to a series of emergencies, which included people in the water, medical incidents, and even managing a helicopter landing site in Chichester.
“It’s estimated that over 40 children were reported missing throughout the day on just one beach,” said a spokesperson for Littlehampton Coastguard. “Thanks to rapid response and cooperation with lifeguards, many were quickly reunited.”
Public Urged to Follow Coastal Safety Advice
With high temperatures drawing thousands to UK beaches, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency has reissued key beach safety guidance to prevent further incidents.
Top tips from the Coastguard:
- Use free wristbands – Available from lifeguards, private estates, or local councils. Write your contact number on it to help responders reunite lost children quickly.
- Take a selfie – Snap a photo of your child at the start of the day to easily identify clothing and appearance.
- Set a meeting point – Choose a clear landmark such as a lifeguard hut or flagpole.
- Call 999 in emergencies – Always ask for the Coastguard and alert the nearest lifeguard.
The Coastguard is urging beachgoers to remain vigilant, especially as more hot weather is expected through the week.
