A second major fire has broken out on Wanstead Flats in the space of 24 hours, with ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackling the blaze.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed it received the first of 37 emergency calls at 1:32pm today (12 August), with control officers deploying crews from Leytonstone, Hainault, Woodford, Walthamstow, and other nearby stations.
Residents have been urged to avoid the area while firefighters work to bring the fire under control. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
This latest incident follows a separate fire at Wanstead Flats yesterday evening, which also required a significant emergency response.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:
“Crews are working hard in challenging conditions to stop the spread of the fire. Please keep doors and windows closed if you live nearby.”
The open grassland site, popular with walkers and dog owners, is particularly vulnerable to fires in hot and dry weather conditions.
