The Downpatrick and County Down Railway is appealing for public assistance following a disturbing act of vandalism that took place on Friday, 20 September 2024. Railway officials, in collaboration with the police, are working to identify those responsible for damaging the historical carriages used for popular steam train excursions.

At approximately 3.30pm, a group of youths illegally entered the railway premises and targeted the carriages. Eyewitness accounts and security footage show the individuals throwing a brick through one of the carriage windows before forcibly entering the vehicle by breaking down a door.

Authorities have released partial descriptions of two suspects involved, and images of the suspects have been circulated. The railway expressed deep concern over the senseless act, stressing the impact on the historical value of the carriages and the damage to a beloved community tourist attraction.

The police are urging anyone with information to come forward. If you recognize the individuals or witnessed any suspicious activity around the railway between 15:00 and 16:00 on Friday, 20 September, please contact the police on 101 and quote crime reference number CC2024092100642.

This incident has deeply affected railway staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to preserve this important piece of local heritage. The Downpatrick and County Down Railway is a significant part of the area’s tourism and serves as a living museum of rail history.

Authorities are hopeful that with public assistance, the vandals will be identified and brought to justice.
