Authorities are seeking the public’s assistance in a high-priority investigation following a serious assault that occurred outside the Cornmill Centre in Darlington town centre last night around 8.10pm
The victim, a man who was waiting at the bus stop with his wife, was viciously attacked by five young men in an unprovoked assault. The assault is believed to have been triggered after the suspects approached the man and requested a slice of pizza. The motive behind this shocking incident remains unclear.
The victim sustained severe injuries and has been admitted to the hospital for treatment. Detectives from Darlington CID, led by Detective Sergeant Liam Robertson, are spearheading the investigation and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Detective Sergeant Robertson expressed his concern over the disturbing attack, stating, “This was an appalling attack which has left a man in the hospital with serious injuries.” He further emphasised the importance of eyewitness accounts, as the incident occurred during the early evening when the town centre was bustling with activity.
In addition to potential witnesses, the authorities are specifically interested in locating the owner of a small dark blue or purple car, possibly a Hyundai i10 or similar model, that was present at the scene. It is believed that the car’s owner may possess crucial information that could assist the investigation.
If you have any details about the assault, saw the suspects before or after the incident, or have any relevant information about the dark blue or purple car, please contact DS Robertson directly at 101, extension number 202690. Alternatively, you can email him at [email protected].
For those who wish to provide information anonymously, you can reach out to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The authorities urge the public to come forward with any relevant details that may aid in bringing those responsible to justice.
