Upgrades Underway for A2 Average Speed Cameras to Boost Road Safety

Transport for London (TfL) has begun work on upgrading average speed cameras on the A2 as part of a wider effort to enhance road safety across London.

The project, expected to be completed by mid-February, aims to replace aging cameras with newer models that offer higher-quality imaging and improved efficiency in enforcement processing by the Metropolitan Police.

No Speed Limit Changes, Minimal Disruption

The new cameras will not result in any changes to speed limits or road layouts.
To minimise disruption, work will primarily take place at night, with only single lane closures.
Roads will remain open as usual at all other times.

The existing cameras, which were installed in 2015 and 2016, are now approaching the end of their operational life, necessitating this essential upgrade.

Commitment to Road Safety

Mandy McGregor, Head of Transport Policing and Community Safety at TfL, emphasised the importance of tackling speeding to prevent fatalities:

“We’re determined to reduce road danger caused by speeding as part of our Vision Zero commitment to eliminate death and serious injury from London’s roads by 2041.

“Last year, speeding was a factor in over half of fatal road collisions in London, and these collisions were all preventable. Our average speed camera systems are approaching end of life, which is why we need to take essential upgrade works to the cameras.”

Vision Zero and Future Plans

The upgrades align with London’s Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries by 2041.

TfL continues to urge drivers to obey speed limits, as enforcement measures will become more efficient with the new camera technology.

Drivers are reminded that speeding remains a leading cause of road fatalities, and these improvements are a crucial step in making London’s roads safer for all users.
