UK Weather Alert: Met Office Issues Yellow Thunderstorm Warning Amid Heatwave

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across large parts of the UK, as intense heat gives way to volatile weather conditions this weekend.

The warning will be in effect from 3:00 PM on Saturday, June 21, until 4:00 AM on Sunday, June 22, covering six major regions, including urban centres like Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, and parts of Wales.

What’s the Warning About?

According to the Met Office, thunderstorms are likely to develop quickly in the hot, humid air, bringing:

  • Frequent lightning strikes
  • Large hailstones (up to 2 cm)
  • Gusty winds reaching 40mph
  • Sudden heavy rainfall (20–40mm in a few hours)

The sudden and severe weather may lead to flash flooding, transport delays, and localized power cuts.

Where Will Be Affected?

The yellow alert applies to:

Residents in both rural areas and densely populated cities are advised to take precautions. Urban drainage systems may struggle to cope with high-intensity rainfall, increasing the risk of surface water flooding.

When Will Storms Strike?

The most intense activity is forecast between 6pm and midnight on Saturday, although conditions could vary by region. The warning expires at 4am Sunday morning, when storms are expected to weaken.

Why the Sudden Storms?

Meteorologists explain that heatwaves often end in storms. As the UK experiences temperatures over 30°C, the warm, moist air creates instability. When it meets cooler air masses, thunderstorms form rapidly.

Who’s Most at Risk?

  • Outdoor events: Glastonbury-goers and sports fans should monitor forecasts closely.
  • Travelers: Expect disruption to trains, roads, and flights, especially in the Midlands and North.
  • Farmers: Hail could damage crops in Wales and Yorkshire.
  • Local authorities and emergency services are on standby for potential flooding and storm damage.
