UK set for ‘one of the biggest drills in history’ in Emergency Alert test next month

The UK Government has confirmed that a nationwide emergency alert test will take place on Sunday, 7 September at 3pm, with all 4G and 5G connected mobile phones set to emit a loud siren and vibration for up to 10 seconds.

The test is part of the Emergency Alerts system, designed to warn the public about nearby life-threatening dangers, including severe flooding, fires, or extreme weather.

A similar test took place on 23 April 2023, and real alerts have since been issued — most recently during Storm Eowyn in January and during the discovery of a 500kg WWII bomb in Plymouth earlier this year.

What to Expect

At the time of the test, users will receive a message reading:

“This is a test of Emergency Alerts, a UK Government service that will warn you if there’s a life-threatening emergency nearby.
You do not need to take any action. In a real emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe.

The message will appear on your phone’s home screen and will be accompanied by a siren-like sound and a strong vibration.

Why It Matters

Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden described the exercise as “one of the biggest public safety exercises in UK history.”

“From major storms to wildfires, this system could save your life in an emergency,” said Mr McFadden. “Just like a fire alarm, it’s important we test the system to ensure it works when needed most.”

Don’t Want the Alert? Here’s How to Opt Out

If you’d prefer not to receive test alerts, especially during the upcoming drill, opt-out options are available.

On Android Devices

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Search for Emergency Alerts
  3. Turn off:
    • Test Alerts
    • Exercise Alerts

    • Operator Alerts

If the setting isn’t visible:

  • Open your phone dialler and enter *#*#2627#*#*
  • Return to settings and search again for emergency alerts

Other Mobile Devices (including iPhones)

Depending on the manufacturer, settings may vary. Try the following paths:

  • Messages → Message Settings → Wireless Emergency Alerts → Turn off Alerts
  • Settings → Sounds → Advanced → Emergency Broadcasts
  • Settings → General Settings → Emergency Alerts
