In a shocking case that has left the community outraged, two women have been found guilty of torturing and killing an African grey parrot while under the influence of alcohol. Nicola Bradley, 35, and Tracy Dixon, 47, both residents of Carlisle, were convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to the defenceless creature.

The appalling incident occurred on July 30 last year when the women, inebriated after a night out, were given a lift by the bird’s owner, Paul Crooks, to his residence. While Mr Crooks was momentarily away, Bradley and Dixon subjected the African grey parrot, affectionately named Sparky, to a horrendous ordeal.

Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard harrowing details of the cruelty inflicted on Sparky. The two women sprayed the parrot with cleaning products and gloss paint and then proceeded to subject her to a short tumble dryer cycle. Upon Mr. Crooks’ return, he discovered the heart-wrenching scene, with feathers scattered all over the floor, and Sparky left in a severely distressed state.

Testifying in court, Mr Crooks tearfully recounted how Sparky had been a beloved companion, known for her charming talents, including singing the National Anthem and the theme tunes of popular TV shows Coronation Street and Emmerdale. The cruel and senseless act had left Sparky unrecognisable, as the bird’s vibrant feathers had turned into a “wet, black mess.”

During the proceedings, Bradley and Dixon initially denied any knowledge of the incident but eventually admitted to their heinous actions. In police interviews and court testimonies, they attempted to shift blame onto each other.

Lead magistrate Jennifer Wilkinson delivered a damning verdict, describing the attack as “sustained” and holding both defendants jointly responsible for causing unnecessary suffering to the protected animal, Sparky the parrot. The women were informed that they would face prison sentences for their reprehensible actions.

Sparky’s tragic fate has sparked outrage among animal lovers and concerned citizens in Carlisle. The African grey parrot was more than just a pet; she was a cherished companion who brought joy to Mr Crooks and his Army colleagues during their online calls with contacts around the world.

Bradley and Dixon will be sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court on August 22
