A recent traffic stop in Tockwith, near Wetherby, has led to a regulatory probe involving two North Yorkshire Police officers. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been called in after allegations emerged that a black man was struck and pepper-sprayed while being restrained during the incident on January 26.
The North Yorkshire Police voluntarily referred the matter to the IOPC, prompting a swift response from the watchdog. Both officers involved have been warned by the IOPC that they may face criminal charges as part of the ongoing investigation. One of the officers has been suspended while inquiries continue, with both facing allegations of gross misconduct.
According to North Yorkshire Police, the use of force was deemed necessary as the man in question, believed to be in his 40s, allegedly turned violent during his arrest. The force emphasized that the officers’ actions were in response to the individual’s behaviour.
While initial reports suggest the man involved was black, the IOPC stated that there is currently no evidence to indicate that race played a role in the incident. The regulatory body has taken statements from multiple sources, including police officers and ambulance staff present at the scene.
The man in his 40s, who was arrested in connection with a traffic incident, was later released on bail. The IOPC’s investigation will focus on the level of force used during the altercation, particularly regarding the use of Pava spray and the alleged striking of the restrained individual.
As the investigation unfolds, the North Yorkshire Police and the IOPC are expected to provide further updates on the matter.
