Tube Union, RMT, Secures Pay Rise on London Underground

The Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) union has successfully negotiated a pay increase for its members on the London Underground (LU), averting the threat of mass strike action.

Representing approximately 10,000 workers on the network, the RMT has secured significant pay rises, particularly benefiting the lowest-paid employees who will see their wages increase by between 8-10%. Additionally, other workers will receive a 5% rise, accompanied by consolidated payments of £1000.

Notably, members earning less than £40,000 will receive an extra consolidated payment, further bolstering their income.

In addition to wage increases, the RMT has made strides towards improving travel facilities for its members on national rail services, demonstrating the union’s commitment to addressing broader workplace concerns.

Looking ahead, the union aims to tackle issues related to pay bands and enhance staff travel benefits through ongoing discussions as part of the 2024 pay negotiations.

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch emphasized the importance of collective action, stating, “Only through our members’ fortitude and commitment to industrial action have we managed to secure a negotiated settlement. Strong organized trades unionism, where members are prepared to take action, gets results.”

Lynch further reiterated the union’s determination to continue advocating for its members, stating, “We will now seek to address the issue of pay bands and staff travel in this year’s pay round.”

The successful negotiation underscores the significance of collective bargaining in ensuring fair wages and improved working conditions for employees in the transport sector.
