A woman in her late 30s has tragically died after sustaining a stab wound at a residence in Cardinal Court, Wilton, in Cork city on Friday evening. Emergency services were alerted by the woman’s husband shortly after 10pm prompting a swift response to the scene. Despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the Southside property.
The deceased’s body remains at the scene, and the Office of the State Pathologist has been notified. A pathologist is expected to visit the location later today, and a post-mortem examination will subsequently take place at Cork University Hospital. In order to conduct a technical examination, the area has been cordoned off.
The couple involved in the incident have a young child who was unharmed during the tragic events. The child is currently being cared for in the aftermath of the incident. It has been revealed that the family is originally from outside of Ireland.
Meanwhile, a man in his 40s was arrested at the scene and is currently being held at Togher Garda Station on the southside of Cork city. He is being questioned in connection with the incident and can be detained for up to 24 hours under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Gardaí, the Irish police force, are urging neighbours to come forward with any information that may assist in their investigation.
