A devastating plane crash occurred in the Brazilian Amazon on Saturday, resulting in the loss of 14 lives as the small propeller plane went down in adverse weather conditions. The incident took place as the aircraft was nearing the conclusion of its 400km (248-mile) journey from Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state, to the remote jungle town of Barcelos.
Officials confirmed that all 12 passengers and two crew members on board perished in the crash, marking a tragic day for those involved and their families. An immediate investigation has been launched to determine the precise cause of the incident.
Amazonas state security secretary Vinicius Almeida provided preliminary information, suggesting that the plane may have crashed due to a shortage of runway when attempting to land in Barcelos amidst heavy rainfall and low visibility caused by adverse weather conditions.
Reports indicate that the aircraft involved was an EMB-110, a twin-engine turboprop manufactured by Brazilian aircraft-maker Embraer. The plane’s owner, Manaus Aerotáxi, asserted that the aircraft and its crew met all necessary requirements for flight.
Amazonas Governor Wilson Lima expressed his condolences and support, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “Our teams have been on the ground responding since the moment of the crash to provide the necessary support. My solidarity and prayers to the victims’ family and friends.”
According to Barcelos Mayor Edson de Paula Rodrigues Mendes, the plane was chartered by a local businessman engaged in game fishing. The passengers were friends from various parts of Brazil who shared a passion for the sport.
Officials have confirmed that the victims’ remains will be transported to Manaus for formal identification and further procedures. Barcelos, a renowned tourist destination, is located near several national parks, making it an attractive spot for nature enthusiasts.
