Bexley Stabbing: Woman Dies, Man Charged with Attempted Murder

In a heart-wrenching incident that has sent shockwaves through the community of Bexley, a woman has tragically lost her life after being brutally stabbed in the head and neck. Leila Young, 33, was found seriously injured on Penhill Road shortly after 4 pm on January 16, marking the beginning of a harrowing ordeal that ultimately claimed her life.

Following the discovery of Ms Young, paramedics swiftly arrived at the scene and rushed her to a nearby hospital in a critical condition. Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, Leila Young succumbed to her injuries on the evening of January 23, plunging her loved ones and the entire community into profound grief.

Tony Curant, 33, a resident of Penhill Road, was taken into custody on January 20, before Ms. Young’s passing, and initially charged with attempted murder. However, the situation took a tragic turn when the victim, Leila Young, succumbed to her injuries.

During a court appearance on Monday, February 5, at the Old Bailey, Tony Curant, wearing a green t-shirt, appeared via video link from HMP Thameside. He confirmed his name and date of birth during the short hearing.

Prosecutor William Emyln Jones KC informed the court of the grim development, revealing that Ms Young had tragically passed away as a result of stab wounds to her head and neck. Consequently, it was indicated that the charges against Curant would be modified to reflect the new circumstances surrounding the case.

In a provisional decision, Judge Philip Katz KC scheduled a trial date for December 2024. Tony Curant will be called upon to enter his pleas in April as the legal proceedings continue to unfold.

The heart-wrenching loss of Leila Young has left an indelible mark on the community, with Penhill Road adorned with candles, bouquets, and handwritten notes in her memory. One note left at the scene expressed the profound sadness of the community, stating, “So heartbreaking. I am so sorry this has happened to you. Sleep tight and may you rest in peace.”

Another poignant message read, “Leila, you will always be remembered for the loving, brilliant mum you are. We will never forget you.”

As the investigation continues and legal proceedings progress, the community of Bexley mourns the tragic loss of Leila Young, a loving mother and cherished member of their community.
