In a tragic incident in East London, a 90-year-old man died after fireworks were reportedly placed through his letterbox, igniting a fatal blaze at his home on Oval Road North in Dagenham. This fire was one of three significant blazes within the area over a span of just 24 hours, raising serious concerns among the local community.

The incident, which occurred at 5:36 PM on July 27, was the last in a series of fires that began the previous day. The London Fire Brigade was first called to a major fire at 1:33 PM on July 26, which damaged a row of terraced houses on Third Avenue. Following this, another fire was reported on Beam Avenue at 1:37 PM on July 27, attended by four fire engines and approximately 25 firefighters.

Assistant Commissioner Thomas Goodall of the London Fire Brigade expressed his condolences and reiterated the Brigade’s commitment to community safety. Following these three separate fires in just over 24 hours in Dagenham, I’d like to reassure residents that London Fire Brigade will be in the community offering support and advice where needed,” Goodall stated. He emphasized the thorough investigations underway, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police, to determine the causes of the fires, which, at this stage, appear to be unconnected.

The fatal incident on Oval Road has particularly shocked the community, with early reports suggesting that the fire was caused by a reckless act involving fireworks. The identity of the elderly victim has not been released, but his death underscores the potential dangers of misusing fireworks and the importance of firework safety, especially in residential areas.

Local fire crews are actively engaging with residents, promoting the Brigade’s Home Fire Safety Checker, and offering fire safety advice. We will also be working with partners, including Barking & Dagenham Council, to support the community during this difficult time,” added Goodall.
