Gogglebox and Celebrity Big Brother star George Gilbey met a tragic end after falling 80ft from a warehouse roof in Shoebury, near Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Friends revealed that the fall occurred while he was working without a harness on Wednesday, leading to his untimely death. Essex Police have arrested a man suspected of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the incident.
George Gilbey, a beloved figure on Gogglebox alongside his mother Linda McGarry and stepfather Pete, fell to his death just three years after losing Pete. The accident occurred at EGL Homecare, where George was working without proper safety precautions. Despite efforts from emergency services, he did not survive the fall.
Witnesses recounted the tragic event, stating that George scaled the roof without a harness and, despite warnings from his colleagues, fell through a skylight to the concrete below. The accident left friends and loved ones devastated, with one friend expressing that George “did not stand a chance.”
In addition to the tragic accident, reports surfaced that George was due to appear in court next month for allegedly assaulting an ex-partner. He had a previous conviction for attacking another ex-girlfriend and was jailed for drink driving in 2019.
A spokesman for Essex Police stated that they have arrested a man in his 40s from the Witham area on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. The investigation is ongoing in collaboration with the Health and Safety Executive.
George, an electrician with over ten years of experience, had aspirations to work in the offshore wind turbine sector. His sudden demise comes as a shock to his family, who were still mourning the loss of Pete. The Gilbey family gained fame on Gogglebox, winning a BAFTA in 2014 and 2022.
