Tragedy Strikes: Teenage Boy Dies, Another Critical After River Tyne Incident
Emergency Services Respond to Incident Near Ovingham Bridge in Northumberland

A leisurely afternoon by the River Tyne turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Saturday as a 14-year-old boy lost his life and his 13-year-old friend clings to survival after encountering difficulties while swimming in Ovingham, Northumberland.

Northumbria Police received a distress call shortly after 3:30 pm on Saturday, alerting them to the plight of two teenage boys struggling in the waters near the Ovingham bridge. Responding promptly, emergency services rushed to the scene, where one of the boys, aged 13, was successfully rescued from the river.

Despite the swift efforts of emergency responders, the 14-year-old boy was later discovered lifeless in the water. Despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene, casting a pall of grief over the community.

The parents of both boys are receiving support from trained officers as they navigate this incomprehensible loss.

Chief Superintendent Helena Barron of Northumbria Police expressed profound sorrow over the tragic incident, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. She acknowledged the collaborative efforts of multiple agencies involved in the search and rescue operation, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, alongside police, ambulance, and mountain rescue teams, mobilized in a coordinated effort to locate the missing teenager, deploying specialized resources and personnel to aid in the search.

Meanwhile, the North East Ambulance Service dispatched a full Hazardous Area Response Team, along with additional medical personnel, to assist at the scene.
