Two serving police officers from Norfolk Police have tragically died in apparent suicides within two weeks of each other while being investigated by their force, according to inquests held in Norwich. PC Richard Dennis, 42, was found dead in Ingoldisthorpe in west Norfolk on June 30, while PC Martin Scott, 35, was found dead in Wymondham on July 13. Both men are believed to have taken their own lives, as revealed during the inquests, which were opened and adjourned.
Norfolk Police expressed their shock and sorrow at the deaths, referring the cases to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for investigation. PC Dennis had been suspended from duty at the time of his death and was under investigation following allegations of criminal conduct. PC Scott, on the other hand, was being investigated in relation to off-duty misconduct allegations but was not suspended and was on restricted duties.
Deputy Chief Constable Simon Megicks acknowledged the tragic losses and extended support to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased officers. He emphasized the demanding nature of policing and the challenges faced by officers, including intense public scrutiny, increasing demand, and the need to meet these challenges while adhering to regulations and guidelines. He confirmed that the cases had been referred to the IOPC and that internal processes were being reviewed.
Mr. Megicks stressed that allegations of misconduct are treated seriously, and investigations are carried out with due consideration to the welfare of the officers, alleged victims, the constabulary, and the wider public. He highlighted the support measures in place within the force, including welfare support officers assigned to individuals involved in misconduct processes and access to workplace health services and counselling programs.
The deaths of PC Richard Dennis and PC Martin Scott serve as a tragic reminder of the emotional toll and pressures faced by police officers in their line of duty. The Norfolk Police Force is committed to supporting their families and colleagues during this difficult time while prioritizing the welfare and well-being of its officers. The investigations by the IOPC will seek to provide clarity and insight into the circumstances surrounding these devastating events.
