Toys R Us has announced the opening of 37 new stores across the UK before Christmas 2024, marking a major expansion of the beloved toy retailer. After going bust in February 2018 and closing all 100 stores, which led to the loss of over 2,000 jobs, the brand is making a strong comeback.
Following its relaunch plans in October 2022 and a strategic partnership with WHSmith, Toys R Us will now open new stores every week between September 28 and Christmas. The new locations will be housed within WHSmith stores.
The iconic toy retailer has already returned to several locations across the UK, and the upcoming expansion signals its determination to restore its presence on the high street.

Sean Toal, Managing Director of WHSmith High Street, expressed his excitement about the expansion: “Nearly 40 years ago, Toys R Us first came to the UK, and we take great pride in being the steward of this much-loved brand. We’ve had queues around the block for many openings in the last year, which tells you just how much people are loving seeing Toys R Us back again.
He added, “Our job isn’t done yet, and I’m pleased to be bringing the magic of Toys R Us to even more customers over the coming months, ready for the best time of year – Christmas!
Michelle Phillips, Toys R Us and WHSmith toys and games buying manager, also highlighted some anticipated bestsellers for the holiday season, including Squishmallows and a new family game from social media stars Ladbaby. Geoffrey the Giraffe, the brand’s famous mascot, will also be available in limited quantities at each store.
As Toys R Us continues its resurgence, the excitement is building for the return of a brand that once dominated the toy market, just in time for the Christmas shopping season.
