Three Men Sentenced After Violent Disorder in Southport

Three men have been sentenced to over six years in prison following their involvement in violent disorder in Southport on July 30. Shannon Gibson, 58, Ben Gibson, 32, both from Wigan, and Oliver Maddocks, 22, from Southport, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today (October 14) after pleading guilty to their roles in the incident.

CCTV footage captured all three men leading a group of individuals throwing missiles at police officers and a police van during the disorder. Maddocks was also recorded stealing items from a local Mini Mart on Windsor Road during the chaos.

The sentencing details are as follows:

  • Shannon Gibson, of Beech Hill Avenue, Wigan, was sentenced to two years and four months in prison.
  • Ben Gibson, of Almond Brook Road, Standish, Wigan, received a sentence of two years and eight months in prison.
  • Oliver Maddocks, of St Luke’s Road, Southport, was sentenced to one year and eight months for violent disorder and burglary.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Roberts commented: “All three offenders sentenced in court today were identified on footage as being in the forefront of the disorder in Southport, which were appalling scenes for the community to experience in the aftermath of the fatal stabbings.

He added that the investigation has so far resulted in 129 arrests, 92 charges, and 70 individuals brought before the courts, amounting to a total of 151 years and 10 months in sentencing. The investigation into the incidents in Merseyside continues, with more arrests and charges expected.
