Three brothers have been charged in connection with the stabbing of a mother who was attending the Notting Hill Carnival with her young child.
The incident, which occurred on the ‘family day’ of the carnival on Sunday, August 25, has left the community in shock.
Shakiel Thibou, 20, of Masbro Road near Holland Park, was charged today (August 28) with attempted murder, violent disorder, and possession of an offensive weapon. Thibou was arrested at an address in Hammersmith and Fulham on Tuesday, August 27, following a police investigation into the attack.
Two of Shakiel’s brothers were also charged in relation to the same incident. Sheldon Thibou, 24, of Star Road, Fulham, faces charges of violent disorder, possession of a stun gun, and assaulting an emergency worker. The youngest brother, Shaeim Thibou, 22, of Charleville Road, was charged with violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker.
The stabbing took place on Golborne Road, near Westbourne Park, during the Notting Hill Carnival, one of London’s most popular annual events. Police officers, including medics deployed at the carnival, responded swiftly to the scene and provided emergency medical treatment to the victim until paramedics arrived. The woman was then taken to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
The brothers appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning and have been remanded in custody.
Charmain Brenyah, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police at Notting Hill Carnival, expressed her concern over the incident, stating, “She came to Carnival to have fun, with her young child, and was caught up in the most awful violence.”
The stabbing was one of several violent incidents reported during this year’s Notting Hill Carnival. Over the two-day event, there were a total of eight reported stabbings. On Sunday, three people were stabbed, with two sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, while the mother involved in this case remains in critical condition. The following day, five more individuals were either stabbed or slashed. While three of these victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries, two men were initially reported to be in life-threatening condition, though one of them is now stable.
The violence has cast a shadow over what is traditionally a joyful celebration of Caribbean culture, and the Metropolitan Police are continuing their investigation into the events that unfolded.
