A massive wildfire is ravaging La Palma in the Canary Islands, prompting authorities to urge thousands of residents to leave their homes. Emergency workers are tirelessly battling to bring the fire under control, which has already consumed approximately 4,500 hectares (11,100 acres) of land and destroyed at least a dozen homes.

The blaze erupted in the early hours of Saturday, starting in the El Pinar area of the northwestern municipality of Puntagorda. It quickly spread southwards towards the town of Tijarafe, fueled by strong winds, challenging climatic conditions, and the ongoing heatwave that the region is experiencing.

Over 400 troops from various agencies are actively on the ground, working tirelessly to combat the fire and protect affected communities. Despite efforts to evacuate residents, some individuals are choosing to remain in their homes, raising concerns for their safety. Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canary Islands regional government, emphasised that saving lives must be the top priority, urging people to prioritize personal safety over property.

As the fire continues to rage, progress has been made in slowing its advance, but authorities stress that it remains out of control. Emergency response efforts have been bolstered by the deployment of a seaplane, with a second seaplane set to join the operation on Sunday. The Spanish army has dispatched 150 firefighters, and additional units are expected to reinforce their ranks. The Red Cross has also established facilities to provide assistance to evacuees.

Spanish President Pedro Sánchez expressed solidarity with the affected people and pledged full support to La Palma’s authorities in combatting the fire. The heatwave currently gripping southern Europe exacerbates the challenges faced by emergency responders.

While some residents express reluctance to evacuate, citing concerns over losing their homes and personal belongings, authorities stress the importance of prioritising human lives above all else. The wildfire comes less than two years after a volcanic eruption devastated the island, leaving thousands of homes destroyed.

As the battle against the fire continues, the global trend of more frequent and intense heatwaves due to global warming highlights the urgent need for concerted efforts to address climate change. The impacts of extreme weather events demand increased resilience and preparedness to protect communities and the environment.
