The operation was dubbed “Operation Red Meat,” which is an insult to the British people. It’s essentially the Conservatives throwing red meat to their disgruntled voters in the hope that they’ll mistakenly believe they’re going to stop the invasion of our country via the Kent coast. When, in fact, the inverse is true.
In the House of Commons, MP Phillip Hollobone explained the policy’s flaws.
On April 14, 2022, the MOD took operational control of the Channel after the Border Force was unable to control the massive influx of illegal immigrants arriving by boat.
All assets responding to illegal Channel crossings, including Border Force vessels and operational elements of the ineffective Clandestine Channel Threat Commander, were handed over to the MOD.
However, the MOD’s involvement in the Channel made no difference in terms of discouraging or stopping crossings.
The government spent £1.1 million on ‘operational control’ in the first month after the MOD took over.
The decision to bring in the MOD was made as part of the government’s ostensibly new immigration plan. This occurred during Priti Patel’s tenure as Home Secretary.
The MOD confirmed that the policy cost the British taxpayer £34,000 per day just for the MOD operating in the Channel, which turned out to be nothing more than a taxi operator in the end.
The daily fee included reporting dinghies spotted in the Channel, as well as monitoring, tracking, and assisting with the ‘processing’ of illegal immigrants.
It should be noted that this cost only applied to the MOD personnel involved.
Nothing will change as a result of this announcement, except that there will almost certainly be more beach landings due to fewer vessels operating in the Channel.
