Thames Valley Police have launched a thorough investigation following a distressing rape incident that occurred in People’s Park, Banbury, in the early hours of Sunday, March 30, 2025. The assault, which took place between 2:30 am and 3:30 am, has led to an arrest and increased police presence in the area, as authorities appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Incident Details

The victim, a woman in her late teens, had met a man at a venue in Banbury town centre earlier that night. After leaving the venue together, the man took her to People’s Park, where the assault occurred. The victim is now receiving support from specially trained officers, reflecting the force’s commitment to victim care during this difficult time.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape and remains in custody as the investigation continues. Detective Sergeant Christopher Bennett of Oxfordshire CID, based in Banbury, who is leading the investigation, stated:

“We are carrying out a thorough investigation following this concerning incident. An arrest has been made, and we continue to support the victim.”

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Authorities are urging anyone who was in or around People’s Park between 2:30 am and 3:30 am to come forward. DS Bennett added:

“We are asking anyone who may have seen anything around that time to please get in contact. If anyone has CCTV, we would ask them to check if it shows anything that may assist our enquiries.

Increased Police Presence

The incident has sparked concern within the local community, and police have reassured residents of their safety by increasing patrols in the area. DS Bennett stated:

“Members of the public will see an increased police presence while we continue to investigate. This is to enhance safety and encourage anyone with information to come forward.”
