In a recent development, it has been confirmed that ten individuals have been charged in connection with protests that occurred on the M57 and Wango Lane during the Grand National event held on Saturday, April 15, 2023.
According to reports, a group of protestors obstructed vehicle access near junction 2 of the M57 at around 17.15, leading to significant traffic disruptions in the area. Additionally, another protest took place on Wango Lane, close to the renowned Aintree racecourse, where demonstrators attempted to impede the flow of traffic.
After a thorough investigation, authorities have charged nine individuals with the offence of wilful obstruction of a highway. The individuals facing charges are as follows:
1. Sarah Love, aged 47, with no fixed abode
2. Zoe Able, aged 27, from Leeders Pightle, Norfolk
3. Lucia Alexander, aged 40, with no fixed abode
4. Jamie Carter, aged 29, with no fixed abode
5. Elenor Kenny, aged 19, with no fixed abode
6. Tobias Brown, aged 49, from West Wycombe Road, High Wycombe
7. James Kelly, aged 46, from Mornant Avenue, Hartford, Northwich
8. Andrew Houghton, aged 66, from Mendip Crescent, Bedford
9. Rosa Sharkey, aged 23, from Chase Side Avenue, Enfield
Additionally, a tenth person, John Edwards, aged 49, from Cox Road, Alresford, Colchester, has been charged with the offence of stopping or causing a vehicle to remain at rest on a motorway carriageway.
All ten individuals have been released on bail and are scheduled to appear in various courts on either Wednesday, November 22, or Wednesday, December 20.
Furthermore, an ongoing investigation is underway regarding another protest that took place at the Aintree racecourse on April 15.
Detective Chief Inspector Ben Dyer emphasised that while Merseyside Police respects the right to peaceful protests and the expression of views, criminal behavior and disorder will never be tolerated.
He urged anyone with information regarding the protest at the racecourse to come forward and assist with the investigation.
