Samurai Sword Attack Shocks Quiet Portslade Street

A terrifying sword attack in broad daylight has put 18-year-old Rhys Wyman behind bars. On July 10, chaos exploded on Franklin Road when Wyman violently slashed a 15-year-old boy with a samurai sword, leaving the teenager seriously injured. Thankfully, the victim has since made a full recovery.

Speedy Police Arrest Two Suspects

  • Wyman, from Eastbourne, charged with possession of a bladed article, an offensive weapon, and grievous bodily harm with intent.
  • A 17-year-old co-accused from Brighton also charged; he remains unnamed due to legal reasons.

While Wyman was remanded in custody, the younger suspect was initially bailed but later re-arrested for breaching bail and is still in custody.

‘Violent and Brazen’ Attack Lands Jail Time

On August 26, Wyman was found guilty of carrying an offensive weapon and attempted grievous bodily harm. The court blasted the attack as “violent and brazen” and warned of the dangers of wielding a sword in public.

On September 29, Wyman was sentenced to 20 months in prison. Detective Constable Harry Judge said:

“Wyman has now been jailed for this violent and brazen assault, committed without a thought for the consequences. The victim has thankfully made a physical recovery, and the injuries from the sword, though serious, could have easily been far more significant.”

Portslade Community On High Alert

The sword attack has left locals on edge, sparking fears of rising youth violence and weapon-carrying in the area. Community leaders are urging young people to think twice before picking up knives or weapons.

Sussex Police have stepped up patrols and launched intervention programmes to clamp down on street violence.

The 17-year-old co-defendant is due back in court on October 14.
