The 15-year-old boy who fatally stabbed his classmate during lunch has finally been named. Mohammed Umar Khan, a pupil at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield, was found guilty of murdering fellow 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose.
Reporting Restrictions Lifted
Until now, Khan’s identity was protected by a reporting restriction. He was only known as “Umar” during the trial. But Mrs Justice Ellenbogen lifted the ban to allow the public full insight into this shocking case.
The judge said: “This was a serious crime carried out by one pupil against another on school property with a knife that was brought into school and was witnessed to varying degrees by other pupils and teachers. The public will wish to know the identity of those who commit serious offences in seeking to understand how a child of that age could do so.”
Knife Crime Debate Ignited
Media groups pushed hard to lift restrictions, arguing that naming Khan would help deter similar crimes and raise awareness around youth knife violence. The case has put the spotlight back on school safety and knife crime in the UK.
Sheffield Boy Faces Sentencing Today
Khan, born and raised in Sheffield, was in the same school year as his victim. He has lived and been educated in the city all his life. He is set to be sentenced later today for the murder that rocked the community.
