In the early hours of Thursday, just before 7 a.m., a distress call was received by the volunteer crew at the Littlestone RNLI Lifeboat station, alerting them to a person in peril in the waters off St Mary’s Bay. Responding with urgency, the volunteers launched the B-Class ILB (Inshore Lifeboat), named ‘Jean McIvor,’ into the grey, drizzly morning, characterized by a light sea swell.

Navigating the choppy waters, the dedicated crew hastened towards the reported coordinates, embarking on a thorough shoreline search for the individual in distress. Their prompt and determined efforts bore fruit when it was discovered that the person had managed to exit the water. Although they were found to be in some distress, fortunately, they were no longer in immediate danger. The Coastguard, already on its way to assist the individual on land, allowed the RNLI lifeboat crew to be stood down.

The ‘Jean McIvor’ and its crew then made their way back to the station, where the lifeboat underwent cleaning and refueling operations, ready to be of service again by 8:30 a.m.

This incident underscores the critical importance of the RNLI volunteers and the life-saving work they perform.
