Suspect in Knockholt Pub Shooting Formally Identified After Body Found in Thames

 

A man believed to be responsible for a fatal firearms incident in Knockholt has been formally identified, police have confirmed.

Lisa Smith, 43, was shot and killed outside a pub on Main Road in Knockholt on Friday, February 14, 2025. Following an extensive investigation, Kent Police identified the primary suspect as her husband, Edward Smith, also aged 43.

Later the same day, Edward Smith’s car was discovered abandoned on the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, sparking a major search operation. Authorities believed he had jumped from the bridge into the River Thames.

On Friday, March 7, Smith’s body was recovered from the river, confirming investigators’ suspicions.

Coroner to Lead Further Investigation

Kent Police has now confirmed that an investigation into both deaths will be led by the coroner, with support from officers in the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.

A police spokesperson said:

“We can confirm the body recovered from the River Thames has been formally identified as Edward Smith. The investigation into the deaths of Lisa and Edward Smith will now proceed under the direction of the coroner.”

The murder of Lisa Smith sent shockwaves through the local community. Residents of Knockholt described her as a well-liked and friendly member of the village, and tributes have continued to pour in following the news of her death.
