Woman Dies in M23 Incident Near Gatwick Airport
A woman has tragically died following a serious incident on the M23 near Gatwick Airport early on Wednesday morning, 10 September.
Surrey Police confirmed they received reports of a pedestrian on the southbound carriageway between junctions 8 and 9 shortly after 6am. Emergency crews, including the england/south-east/”>South East Coast Ambulance Service, attended the scene, but the woman, believed to be in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scotland/”>scotland/roadside/”>roadside. Her next of kin have been informed.
Road Closures and Investigation
A spokesperson for Surrey Police stated, “The M23 was subject to a full closure between junctions 8 and 9 for an extended period of time. We thank people for their patience and understanding.”
The northbound carriageway fully reopened shortly after 8am, while lanes 3 and 4 of the southbound carriageway were opened at 2pm. However, lanes 1 and 2 remain closed and are expected to stay that way for several hours.
Police Conduct Investigation
Surrey Police have confirmed a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to police contact with the deceased in the days leading up to the incident. No arrests have been made, and officers are conducting a full investigation into the circumstances. Police are appealing for anyone with information or who may have seen the woman in the area before the incident to come forward.
