SP Energy Networks engineers are working tirelessly to restore power to 70,000 customers following the impact of Storm Éowyn, which has brought some of the strongest winds in decades to parts of the UK. The storm has caused widespread disruption across central and southern Scotland, as well as affecting North Wales and the west of England.
The ‘once in a generation’ storm has battered the country throughout the day, with wind speeds in Scotland exceeding 100mph. These extreme weather conditions have hampered efforts to assess the damage and restore power, as fallen debris and downed trees continue to affect powerlines. A rare red weather warning remains in place in Scotland, where the storm’s impact has been most severe.
As of the latest update, there are currently 68,000 customers without power in central and southern Scotland, and 2,000 in the Manweb area. SP Energy Networks has mobilised multiple repair teams across these regions and is working diligently to restore service where possible. However, high winds and unsafe conditions in some areas have delayed progress in certain locations.
Guy Jefferson, Managing Director of SP Energy Networks’ Transmission division, commented: “With red and amber warnings issued across our network area, we moved teams and resources into place ahead of Storm Éowyn’s arrival. We have been in contact with vulnerable customers on our Priority Services Register to offer support. The wind speeds have been over 100mph in parts of Scotland, and the conditions remain treacherous, making it difficult to assess and repair damage. We’re committed to restoring power as soon as it is safe to do so.”
SP Energy Networks has proactively reached out to 75,000 customers on the Priority Services Register across the region, ensuring that those who need extra help are supported during this challenging time. In addition to working to restore power, the company has organised a number of warm hubs, mobilised food vans, and arranged hotel accommodations for customers in urgent need.
Jefferson continued, “For those currently without power, please know we are doing everything we can to restore your service as quickly as possible. If you’re experiencing a power outage, please report it to us via our website or by calling the free, national emergency helpline at 105.”
SP Energy Networks has invested billions into ensuring its network is safe, reliable, and resilient, but extreme weather events like Storm Éowyn’s strong winds increase the likelihood of power cuts. The company continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of its customers as it works through the ongoing storm recovery efforts.
