A six-year-old British girl was rescued from a hotel pool in Tenerife, Spain, 50 minutes after a lifeguard had finished their shift, according to reports.

The incident occurred at the Granada Park Aparthotel pool in Los Cristianos, on the southwest coast of Tenerife, on May 9, around 6:50 pm local time.

Local police have launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on determining the whereabouts of the young girl’s parents at the time and why there was no lifeguard present at the pool.

Emergency services received a distress call requesting medical assistance for the girl, who had been rescued from the pool by several other guests and staff members.

Upon arrival at the scene, a nearby police unit found the girl conscious but very scared. Rescuers had already initiated mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, indicating that the girl had appeared to be drowning when pulled from the water.

Within moments, two motorcyclists and two patrol vehicles arrived at the scene, accompanied by a doctor and a first aider. Ambulances transported the girl to a nearby medical centre.

At the medical centre, the girl was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia, a condition caused by inhaling liquid into the respiratory tract or lungs. Although hospital staff were able to stabilize her, the severity of her condition required her transfer to a pediatric emergency department at a university hospital.

The current condition of the girl remains unknown as investigators continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are working to determine the events leading up to the girl’s ordeal and ensure appropriate measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
