Shop Fire in Tunbridge Wells Caused by Discarded Smoking Materials — No Injuries Reported

Firefighters were called to a shop fire on Mount Pleasant Road in Tunbridge Wells on the evening of Thursday, 29 May, after reports of smoke and flames emerging from a commercial premises.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service received the call at 8:18pm, and two fire engines were promptly dispatched to the scene. Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and used high-pressure hose reel jets to bring the fire under control.

The incident was fully resolved by 10:02pm, with no injuries reported. Kent Police also attended to assist with safety cordons and scene management.

Cause of Fire Identified

Investigators believe the fire was caused by improperly disposed smoking materials, which ignited nearby combustibles. A formal investigation has concluded the fire was accidental.

Safety Reminder from Kent Fire and Rescue Service

In the wake of the incident, Kent Fire and Rescue Service has issued a reminder to the public:

  • Always ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished and cool before disposal

  • Use sturdy ashtrays that cannot be easily knocked over

  • Avoid smoking indoors, especially near flammable materials

A spokesperson said:

“Thankfully no one was injured, but this incident serves as a timely reminder that even small embers can cause significant damage if not properly managed.”

Mount Pleasant Road was partially closed during the operation but reopened later that night.
