A severe dog attack in Whiston, Rotherham has left an elderly woman hospitalized, with medical teams battling to save her limb after a pocket bully—a breed known for its strength—turned on its carer. The incident, which occurred on May 21, has prompted police and experts to urge urgent action around the issue of dangerously out-of-control dogs in the UK.

South Yorkshire Police responded to distress calls around midday, with residents having already contained the dog. The victim was reportedly caring for the dog at the time. The animal was seized and placed in secure kennels.

“You are more likely to be bitten by a dog known to you,” said Chief Inspector Emma Cheney, South Yorkshire Police’s lead on dangerous dogs.
