A second Australian teenager has tragically died from suspected methanol poisoning in Laos, raising the death toll to six in the ongoing incident.
Nineteen-year-old Holly Bowles, from Melbourne, passed away, as confirmed by Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Senator Penny Wong.
“All Australians will be heartbroken by the tragic passing of Holly Bowles. I offer my deepest sympathies to her family and friends,” Senator Wong stated.
Holly’s death comes just days after that of her best friend, Bianca Jones, also 19 and from Melbourne. Both teenagers were reportedly poisoned after consuming drinks laced with methanol in Vang Vieng, a popular resort town among backpackers.
Deaths Include British and American Nationals
Among the victims is Simone White, a 28-year-old lawyer from Orpington, Kent, whose death was announced on Thursday. She fell ill after reportedly drinking “free shots” at a local bar.
The other victims include two Danish women in their 20s and a 56-year-old US citizen.
Methanol Poisoning
The deaths are believed to have been caused by methanol, a toxic alcohol sometimes used as a cheap substitute in mixed drinks. Methanol consumption can lead to severe poisoning and even death.
Methanol poisoning has long been a concern in some countries, where adulterated or counterfeit alcohol is distributed to cut costs.
Official Warnings
The Australian and British governments have previously issued warnings to travellers in Laos about the dangers of consuming locally mixed drinks.
Investigations Underway
Local authorities in Laos have launched an investigation into the deaths. Many of the affected individuals had reportedly consumed free shots offered at a local bar in Vang Vieng.
Tributes Pour In
The news of Holly and Bianca’s deaths has sparked an outpouring of grief from friends, family, and the broader Australian community.
Holly’s family is expected to release a statement in the coming days. Meanwhile, the Australian government has pledged to provide support to the victims’ families.
Further updates are awaited as investigations into the tragic incident continue.
