Sarah Ferguson has wiped all mentions of the Duchess of York from her social media profiles after she and Prince Andrew agreed to stop using their royal titles in public.
Royal Scandal Forces Title Drop
The former royal couple, engulfed in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, confirmed on 17 October that they would no longer use their York titles. Sarah swapped her “SarahTheDuchess” handle on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok for “sarahMFergie15,” using her maiden name’s famous nickname.
Prince Andrew stated: “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.”
He added, “With His Majesty’s agreement, I must now go a step further… I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me.” Despite this, Andrew continues to deny all allegations.
Royal Website Erases Duke of York
The official royal website has scrubbed all mentions of “Duke of York.” Instead, Andrew is now referred to simply as “Prince Andrew.”
The site notes: “On 13 January 2022, Buckingham Palace announced Prince Andrew’s military affiliations and Royal patronages would be returned to Her late Majesty. The Prince would not return to public duties.”
Yet, under UK law, Andrew technically still holds the dukedom, as formal removal requires an Act of Parliament.
Calls Grow to Strip Title for Good
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer faces rising pressure to legislate to strip Andrew permanently of his dukedom.
- Stephen Flynn, SNP leader at Westminster, told The Telegraph: “There can be no justification from this Labour Government as to why that is not immediately happening.”
- A Labour MP added: “I do think he ought to be stripped of all titles.”
However, Environment Secretary Ed Miliband said the government would be “guided by the Royal Family.” He noted the family didn’t want Parliament tied up over the issue.
Sarah’s Social Media Shake-Up Signals New Chapter
Sarah’s new “sarahMFergie15” handle signals a symbolic return to her roots — dropping royal trappings for her maiden Ferguson identity.
The move comes after decades as Duchess of York, a title she kept even after their 1996 divorce. Despite their split, the couple remains close and has lived together at Windsor’s Royal Lodge.
The Epstein Shadow Looms Large
Andrew’s decision to relinquish his title underscores the long-lasting fallout from the Epstein scandal. His disastrous 2019 BBC interview badly damaged his reputation, leading to his 2019 retreat from royal duties and the stripping of military roles in 2022.
Though Andrew keeps the dukedom legally, ditching the title publicly seems a way to avoid constitutional headaches while easing royal tensions.
The Future of Royal Lodge?
The couple’s future at Royal Lodge remains uncertain. Andrew holds a 75-year lease on the Crown Estate property, complicating any move to evict him despite reports that King Charles may want him out.
As Sarah and Andrew step back from their York titles, the scandal and political pressure to remove Andrew’s dukedom for good shows no signs of fading.
