RNAS Culdrose’s 824 Naval Air Squadron Welcomes New Commanding Officer

RNAS Culdrose’s 824 Naval Air Squadron has welcomed a new commanding officer. In a formal ceremony, Cdr Chris Jones handed over command to Cdr Alex Kelley, who then addressed the assembled men and women of the Merlin helicopter squadron.

Cdr Kelley, who joined the Royal Navy in 2005, brings a wealth of experience to the role. She trained as an observer on the Merlin Mk1 before converting to the Mk2, the current aircraft in use. A former instructor and senior observer at 824 NAS, Cdr Kelley is well-acquainted with the squadron, which is responsible for training helicopter aircrew and air engineers while also playing a frontline role in protecting UK waters.

Cdr Kelley has had a distinguished career, including commanding the Guard of Honour during the coronation of King Charles last year. Additionally, she manages HMS Oardacious Valkyries, the first all-female military team attempting to row the Atlantic Ocean.

In her address, Cdr Kelley expressed her gratitude and enthusiasm for her new role. I am deeply honoured to take command of 824 Naval Air Squadron, a unit with a proud tradition of excellence and dedication. I look forward to working with the talented men and women of this squadron as we continue our vital work in training and operations.
