Drivers with keyless entry cars are advised to enhance security measures to deter theft. This warning comes amid an increase in organized crime groups targeting keyless, typically high-end vehicles in Sussex.

These thefts often occur on private driveways and public parking areas. To safeguard their vehicles, owners should consider protective steps.

Keeping key fobs in Faraday bags can block electronic signals from being transmitted outside the home. Additionally, employing a steering wheel lock can significantly hinder a criminal’s ability to operate the vehicle.

Detective Chief Inspector Karrie Bohanna, from Surrey and Sussex Operations Command, said: “We have seen criminals targeting keyless entry vehicles for theft and use in their criminality.

“In December 29 vehicles were stolen in this way across Sussex, and in November there were 36 incidents.

“We are aware of the impact this criminality has and our teams are working hard to disrupt criminal groups using our roads to steal these vehicles.

“Owners can also take simple steps such as keeping key fobs in Faraday bags and using a steering wheel lock to help prevent crime.

“We also ask communities to be vigilant to this kind of incidents, and to report any suspicious behaviour to us to inform our policing response.”
