A 23-year-old prison officer has pleaded guilty to having an illicit relationship with an inmate while working at two different jails in South Wales.
Megan Breen admitted to a three-month “inappropriate relationship” with the prisoner while employed at HMP Usk and HMP Prescoed between February and May 2022.
Breen had initially denied misconduct in a public office but changed her plea to guilty at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court yesterday.
The charge stated that, while acting as a public officer, Breen “wilfully and without reasonable excuse or justification” engaged in conduct that “amounted to an abuse of the public’s trust” by forming a personal relationship with the inmate.
A second allegation — that Breen had illegally accessed a computer — will not be pursued by prosecutors.
Judge granted Breen bail but warned she could face a custodial sentence when she returns to court for sentencing next month.
Both HMP Usk and HMP Prescoed are Category C prisons in Gwent, housing male inmates. The Ministry of Justice has not issued further comment on the case.
