Preston and South Ribble Flood Scheme Earns National Recognition with Considerate Constructors Scheme Award

The Preston and South Ribble Flood Risk Management Scheme has been honoured with a prestigious award, marking a significant milestone in its progress towards completion.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme 2024 National Site Award was bestowed upon the flood scheme in recognition of its exemplary delivery. The award ceremony saw Phil Mahon from VolkerStevin, the contractors responsible for building the £54.7 million project, proudly accept the accolade.

This esteemed award underscores the positive impact of the flood scheme, which is poised to significantly enhance flood protection for thousands of homes and businesses along the River Ribble and River Darwen in Preston and South Ribble upon its completion.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) sets out to elevate standards within the construction industry by encouraging companies to surpass statutory requirements. Those enrolled in the Scheme commit to adhering to its Code of Considerate Practice, which emphasizes respect for the community, care for the environment, and valuing the workforce.

A recent CCS audit of the Preston and South Ribble Flood Risk Management Scheme highlighted several commendable aspects of its execution. The project team was praised for establishing excellent communication channels with the local community, making positive contributions to the natural environment, and fostering strong connections with local schools and charities.

Mark Reed from VolkerStevin expressed his delight at receiving the CCS National Site Award, hailing it as a testament to the project’s exceptional performance across the key areas outlined in the Code of Considerate Practice. Reed emphasized the team’s dedication to respecting the community, prioritizing environmental stewardship, and valuing the workforce.

Progress on the flood scheme has been notable, with significant milestones achieved along Broadgate and Riverside. Construction along Riverside recently saw the installation of glass panels as part of the flood defences, showcasing the project’s tangible advancements. Meanwhile, in South Ribble, the completion of works on the embankment and revetment marks substantial progress, with construction underway on a new flood wall.

The recognition garnered by the Preston and South Ribble Flood Risk Management Scheme underscores its importance in safeguarding communities against the devastating impacts of flooding. As the project continues to forge ahead, its commitment to excellence in construction and consideration for the community and environment sets a commendable standard for future endeavours in flood risk management.
