South Wales Police have relaunched a forensic review into a tragic house fire that claimed the lives of Diane Jones, 21, and her two young daughters, Shauna Hibberd (2) and Sarah-Jane Hibberd (13 months).
The deadly blaze tore through their Merthyr Tydfil home on the Gurnos estate on 11 October 1995. Investigators confirmed the fire was deliberately started using an accelerant poured through the letterbox of the three-bedroom end-terrace house.
Hopes Rise With New Forensic Technology
Three decades on, the Major Crime Review Unit is diving back into the case, hopeful that modern forensic advances will finally catch the arsonist responsible for this heart-wrenching crime.
All three victims were found in an upstairs bedroom and sadly died from their injuries. Police are urging anyone with fresh information to step forward — even if they haven’t spoken before.
Family Plea for Justice After All These Years
“On October 11, 1995, my heart, my life got shattered into a million pieces,” said Mary, Diane’s sister. “It has been 30 years but as a family we are still living this nightmare as if it only happened yesterday. “We didn’t just lose a sister and our nieces, we also lost our parents. My father took his own life in 2003, unable to live without them. My mother fought tirelessly for justice before she sadly passed away. “I’m hoping someone out there holds the key to what happened. Please do the right thing and come forward so my sister can finally rest with her babies. “As a family, we will never stop fighting for justice. My parents didn’t get to see it, but I hope I will—for them.”
