An officer has been dismissed from the Metropolitan Police following a misconduct hearing that found he acted in a sexually inappropriate manner towards a colleague.
PC Jason Brooking, who was based at the Central North command unit, faced allegations of breaching standards of professional behaviour concerning discreditable conduct and authority, respect, and courtesy. The incident in question occurred on January 26, 2022, when Brooking touched a colleague in a sexual manner during a night out.
Chief Superintendent Andy Carter, who oversees policing in Central North, expressed his dismay at Brooking’s conduct. He stated, “PC Brooking’s actions were unwanted, grossly invasive, and entirely wrong. Either he failed to recognize the inappropriateness of his behaviour or believed he could act with impunity. Either of those positions are extremely concerning, and it is therefore entirely appropriate that he has been dismissed from the organisation.
The Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) launched an investigation into the incident after it was reported in March 2022. A file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which concluded that there was no criminal case to answer. However, the DPS recommended Brooking face a misconduct hearing.
At the conclusion of the hearing on September 27, an independent chair found that the allegation relating to the incident on January 26 was proven, while a similar allegation from January 27 or 28 was not proven. As a result, Brooking was dismissed without notice.
Following his dismissal, PC Brooking will be placed on the barred list maintained by the College of Policing. This means he cannot be employed by the police, local policing bodies, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, or His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.
