Avon & Somerset Police are urgently investigating a rape reported in Victoria Park, Taunton. The attack happened overnight from Friday, 10 October, into the early hours of Saturday, 11 October.
Woman Found Distressed, Investigation Underway
Members of the public discovered the woman in a distressed state around 5am on Saturday and immediately alerted officers. Police cordoned off part of Victoria Park while carrying out initial investigations, which have now concluded. However, enquiries remain in the early stages.
Suspect Description and Police Appeal
The victim described her attacker as a Black man in his twenties, muscular build, with a beard. She said he approached her and they spent time talking on a park bench before the assault occurred.
Detective Sergeant Wendy Fellowes said: “We’re taking this incident very seriously and carrying out our enquiries at pace. Investigators will remain in the area in the coming days as we continue to follow up all available leads.” “We’re supporting the woman and have offered her access to specialist services. I’d urge anyone who was in Victoria Park between 10pm on Friday and 5am on Saturday with any information or footage to come forward.”
Police Release CCTV Image of Man They Want to Trace
Officers have now released an image of a man spotted on CCTV in the area. He is described as Black, with a beard, wearing a blue top with white lettering, a darker blue jacket, light-coloured trousers, trainers, and a baseball cap.
Police want to speak to this man and anyone who recognises him or has additional information.
