Police have issued a firm warning against anti-social and dangerous driving following a large car meet last weekend where participants were seen performing doughnuts, setting off fireworks, hanging out of moving vehicles, and driving at high speeds. Chief Superintendent Darren O’Callaghan emphasised that such reckless behaviour will not be tolerated, as officers continue their efforts to identify those involved and remove dangerous vehicles from the roads.
The car meet, which took place last weekend, saw large crowds engaging in risky activities, putting both participants and bystanders in danger. Since then, police have made progress in holding those involved accountable. Two individuals have been arrested, three vehicles have been seized, and several others have been reported for summons or issued warnings.
We have been working hard to identify the individuals involved, seize vehicles, and prevent further offences,” said Chief Superintendent O’Callaghan. “We will use all available tactics to swiftly and robustly deal with any similar behaviour.
In a statement ahead of the upcoming weekend, Chief Superintendent O’Callaghan urged car enthusiasts to act responsibly and refrain from engaging in reckless activities. If you do not want to find us knocking at your door and taking away your car, it is very simple: do not engage in this reckless and disorderly behaviour,” he said.
While acknowledging that many car enthusiasts act responsibly and enjoy showcasing their vehicles safely, Chief Superintendent O’Callaghan expressed concerns about those flouting traffic laws and jeopardizing community safety. Too many are now blighting our communities and having a serious impact on people’s lives,” he noted.
We will not tolerate anti-social and dangerous driving that puts people at risk on our roads. Not only are those attending these events at risk should someone lose control of a vehicle, but innocent bystanders simply trying to go about their business are also being endangered,” he added.
Authorities are committed to ensuring the safety of the community and will continue to take strong action against those engaging in dangerous driving. Anyone with information about such incidents is encouraged to come forward and assist the police in their efforts to make the roads safer for everyone.
