Police Scotland have intensified their investigation following a disturbing report of a possible assault involving a young girl in Rex Park, Dunfermline. The incident, reported on 16 March 2025, has left the local community concerned, with no suspect identified over a week later.
Report Sparks Urgent Response
At around 4:55pm, officers received a call from a concerned member of the public who witnessed what was believed to be a young girl in distress after being approached by a man in Rex Park—a popular recreational area southeast of Dunfermline’s city centre.
The girl was described as visibly shaken but thankfully uninjured. She did not require medical treatment, but the nature of the incident triggered a major police response.
The man allegedly involved is described as white, in his early 40s, around 6ft tall with a slim build, balding with dark, messy hair. He was reportedly wearing a bright orange jacket with a hood, blue jeans, and boots.
Police Launch Extensive Search
Since the report, Police Scotland has conducted what Chief Inspector Christopher Dow described as “extensive enquiries.” Officers have canvassed the area, interviewed residents and parkgoers, liaised with local schools, and reviewed hours of CCTV footage from nearby homes and businesses.
“We’ve had a significant presence in Rex Park and surrounding streets since the report,” said CI Dow. “Our aim is to fully understand the circumstances of what happened and ensure public safety remains a priority.”
Despite the detailed description provided and widespread efforts, no additional witnesses or victims have come forward, and CCTV has so far not yielded any conclusive evidence.
Community Left Anxious
The absence of further information has left many in Dunfermline anxious and confused. “This is a well-used public space, particularly in the late afternoon. We are surprised no one else has reported seeing anything similar,” CI Dow added.
Police have reassured the public that increased patrols will continue in and around the park to offer reassurance and to encourage anyone with even the slightest piece of information to come forward.
Appeal for Information
Police Scotland is urging the public to help piece together the circumstances of the incident. “If you were in Rex Park or the surrounding area on the afternoon of Sunday 16 March and saw anything suspicious—or recognise the description of the man involved—please contact us immediately,” CI Dow urged.
Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference number 20250316-2475, or report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance. Police continue to work to establish the facts and ensure Dunfermline’s public spaces remain safe for all.
