Police Investigate Allegations of Misused Campaign Funds by MP

Lancashire Police are currently reviewing evidence related to allegations that Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Mark Menzies misused campaign funds. The claims center around Menzies’ alleged use of political donations to cover medical expenses and pay off individuals who had confined him in a flat and demanded thousands of pounds for his release.

Police Investigate Allegations of Misused Campaign Funds by MP

The situation unfolded after a Tory activist revealed that she had called for Menzies’ dismissal months ago due to these allegations. The MP, who represents the Fylde constituency, has strongly disputed the claims but now faces serious repercussions. Let’s delve into the details:

Late-Night Call and Financial Transactions:

According to The Times, Menzies made a late-night call to an elderly party volunteer, urgently requesting £5,000 to pay off “bad people” who had locked him in a flat. Eventually, a sum of £6,500 was paid to secure his release. The money reportedly came from local Conservative party funds, and an investigation is underway.

Menzies’ office manager, who used personal savings to cover the amount, was later reimbursed from campaign donations.

A source close to Menzies claimed that he paid the money out of fear but lacked sufficient personal savings. The local Tories allegedly advised him that repayment was unnecessary.

The Conservative Party became aware of these allegations in January when Menzies’ former campaign manager reported the incident to Chief Whip Simon Hart.

Medical Expenses and Party Funds:

The Times also reported that Menzies used a total of £14,000 from campaign funds over several payments spanning four years to cover his personal medical bills.

A source close to Menzies disputed this claim, but the money was not repaid.

Suspension and Independence:

In light of the allegations, Menzies lost the Conservative whip, effectively making him an independent MP.

Additionally, he was suspended from his role as one of Rishi Sunak’s trade envoys.

Police Involvement:

Lancashire Police is currently reviewing available information in more detail. No formal complaint has been made yet, but they plan to contact those impacted to assess whether they wish to file a complaint.

Menzies’ Response:

In a statement, Menzies said he strongly disputes the allegations and emphasised his compliance with funding declaration rules.

As the investigation continues, he refrained from further commenting on the matter.
