Kane Hull, 30, who was jailed for life last year for a fatal stabbing in Carlisle, was back before the city’s crown court today ( July 5 ) to be sentenced for another offence.

Last year, while remanded in prison awaiting trial for the murder, Hull conspired with another man, Steven Kidd, 25, to set fire to property.

On October 3 emergency services were called to a car fire in the west of the city. The car belonged to a relative of someone known to Hull.

Detectives’ analysis of text messaging, which included threats from Hull – one of which talked about “setting your gafs on fire” – cracked the case.

Both men admitted their offences at court.

Hull admitted conspiring to commit arson and possessing prohibited items – phones – in prison.

He received a further 30-month jail sentence.

Kidd, of Haydock Drive, Carlisle, admitted conspiring to commit arson and offences of driving while disqualified and using a vehicle without insurance.

He was sentenced to 37 months in jail.

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Inspector Martyn Park said: “We will relentlessly pursue criminals like Hull, who seem to believe they can continue to issue threats and carry out some of the most serious offences possible, even while in prison.

“Cumbria is a safer place with a man like Hull in jail – and we will ensure any suggestion of further offending is fully investigated.

“Similarly, in the case of Kidd – anyone who continues to conspire with people such as Hull will face prosecution and a sentence of their own.

“We will not stand for this type of criminality in our communities.”
