Police have been granted extra stop and search powers following a major disturbance involving a large group of youths at a funfair on Blackheath Common.

Officers were called to the scene at around 3.30pm today after reports of disorder involving a significant number of young people. In response, a road closure was implemented along Prince Charles Road, between Shooters Hill Road and Montpelier Road, as police moved to contain the situation.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that several arrests have been made for a variety of offences, including suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in a public space. The exact number of arrests has not yet been disclosed.

A Section 60 order has been authorised in the area, granting officers temporary powers to stop and search individuals without the usual requirement of reasonable suspicion. It remains unclear how long the order will be in effect.

A Met Police spokesperson said:
“On Tuesday, 8 April, police were made aware of a large group of youths causing disorder on Blackheath Common. Officers are currently on scene dispersing youths who may still remain, while the majority were cleared throughout the afternoon.”

“There were several arrests for separate offences, including arrests for possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. A Section 60 order has been put in place within the area. Police continue to monitor the situation. Enquiries are ongoing.”

The funfair, a popular seasonal attraction on Blackheath Common, has previously drawn large crowds. Today’s disruption prompted a significant police response, with images shared on social media showing a large presence of officers in the area.

Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and report any suspicious behaviour as investigations continue.
