Police detain man after overnight roof top stand off in Shanklin

Officers from Hampshire Constabulary have detained a man after he took to the roof of a property in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight in the early hours of this morning. Police were called to Grange Road in Shanklin old Village just after 5am. Residents have described being woken to the smashing of roof slates being thrown at officers on the ground and being to remain indoors for their own safety. A Police van and car blocked each end of Grange Road in the town. Despite initial resistance by the man just after 7am he agreed to come down and was arrested for Criminal damage and taken away to Newport Police station in a van.
