Police Appeal Following Theft of Cherished ‘Horseshoe Seat’ in Ebchester

Durham Constabulary is seeking public assistance following the theft of a beloved local landmark in the village of Ebchester. The iconic ‘Horseshoe Seat,’ located on Chare Bank, was reported missing between the 11th and 12th of September, 2024.

The seat, forged by a local family over 25 years ago, had become a prominent fixture in the area, holding sentimental value for many of Ebchester’s residents. Positioned on the steep incline of Chare Bank, the seat was often used by pedestrians as a resting spot and had developed into a key part of the community’s heritage.

A spokesperson for Consett Police said: “The theft of the ‘Horseshoe Seat’ is more than just a loss of public property. It is the theft of a piece of Ebchester’s shared memories and history. We understand the impact this has on the community and are committed to recovering this important landmark.”

Initial investigations suggest that considerable effort was involved in removing the seat, as evidence indicates it was grounded away from its concrete foundation.

Durham Constabulary is urging anyone with information to come forward, particularly those who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area during the time of the theft. Residents with any relevant details are encouraged to contact Consett Police by calling 101 and quoting the crime reference number CRI00569313.
