Train services have been suspended across the New Forest after a person was struck by a train between Southampton Central and Brockenhurst earlier this afternoon, South Western Railway has confirmed.
The incident occurred shortly before 3:30pm, prompting a major response from emergency services and railway support teams. All lines between Southampton and Brockenhurst have been blocked, and disruption is expected to continue until at least 10pm tonight.
A spokesperson for South Western Railway said:
“We have received reports that a person has been struck by a train between Southampton Central and Brockenhurst. Our response teams are working with the emergency services to assist with the incident.
In order to allow emergency services access to the railway, all power to the track will need to be switched off in the affected area.”
Replacement Travel Options and Bus Services
As a result of the closure, all train services between Bournemouth and Southampton have been suspended, and extensive alternative travel arrangements have been put in place. Rail tickets are being accepted at no extra cost on several bus and coach routes to assist stranded passengers.
Alternative Bus Routes Include:
- Bluestar 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 between Southampton, Millbrook, Totton, Ashurst, Brockenhurst and Lymington
- Morebus X1, X2, 119, 120, 1A, 1B, 1C, 33, 16, 17, 20, 8, 9, 40 covering routes across Lymington, New Milton, Christchurch, Bournemouth, Poole, Sway, Wareham
- First Bus X51, X54, and 10 between Weymouth, Dorchester, Upwey, Wool
Rail Replacement Buses:
- Two fast buses departing Southampton Central to Bournemouth via Brockenhurst, expected to begin operating from around 3:45pm, with shuttle services thereafter.
- One bus from Bournemouth to Southampton, also calling at Brockenhurst, launching at the same time.
South Western Railway has advised passengers to speak to staff at stations or use help points for assistance and onward travel advice.
“We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey,” the company added.
Ongoing Emergency Response
No further details have yet been released regarding the condition of the person involved. Emergency services remain on site, and power to the affected track section has been fully switched off to facilitate the operation.
